She shivered as he touched her, and she jumped a little from being startled. She looked over, noticing the bruise and Remus, and quickly pulled a blouse over her, starting to button it up, laughing off his comment.
"It's just from football. I slipped and fell, you know me. That's what I get for playing after the rain," she said, smiling at him. She noticed his scars--there were loads, looking old and new. She was going to ask, but instead looked suspiciously up at him, deciding against asking.

"Marlene, that's not from football and I know it. There's one on your elbow, too; don't think I don't notice." He looked her over, trying to gauge her reaction. "Answer me again and answer me honestly-- where did you get those bruises from?"

Marly shimmied off her shorts, and pulled on her skirt, zipping it up and digging through her trunk for her stockings. "Remus, let it go, honestly. I'm just clumsy, alright?"

"Marlene," Remus said, warningly. He almost never used her full name. "You don't get those kinds of bruises from just a fall in sports. It just doesn't happen."

"Merlin, you don't listen," she grumbled, pulling up her other stocking and pulling on her shoes. "Look, I got in a fight, ok? Really, you're overreacting about nothing."

Remus bit his lip, reluctant to let the subject drop, but finally murmured, "Fine," and finished pulling on his robes.

She sighed, pulled her sweater over her head and pulling her hair out. She rolled up her sleeves and her blouse, and kept a few buttons unbuttoned, and the bottom of her blouse was poking out from under her sweater--she was always messy like that. She turned to Remus when she finished.
"Look, Rem, I didn't mean to snap, and I'm sorry," she said slowly--she wasn't one for apologies. "It's just...nothing. A little quarrel is all. Alright?"

"All right," Remus relented slowly, but said to her, "Marlene, you know that if something was going on, you could tell me, right?"

She nodded, though it was something she thought about. She did know him well...and for a long time. But it wasn't really an issue of trust, per se. She just didn't know how to share. She wasn't big on talking about serious life issues. "Thanks," she mumbled. "And um, same to you...y'know."

"They're nothing," Remus said simply, knowing she'd wondered about the scars. "I fell on some rocks when I was a kid."

She gave him a cautious look. Scars placed over your body that randomly weren't from rocks--she wasn't stupid. "Yeah, you fell on rocks and I fell playing football," she said sarcastically, but not pushing the issue. She closed her trunk and lifted it, putting it back up, the only difficulty being that she was short.

Remus pushed the trunk back in easily, given that he was about a head taller than she was. "I did it all the time when I was a kid. I wasn't very good at it, which is why I fell so much." The lie was weak even to him. He knew that he would have to tell her sometime...

"Rem, I'm making you tell me what's going on, but honestly, I'm not as thick as I look. Just tell me it's nothing, cause you're a terrible liar, no offense," she said, laughing little. James and Sirius must have done all the talking when they got in trouble, because the boys had been talked out of detentions before--clearly, Remus didn't do that talking.

Remus started to tell her it was nothing, but stopped. That was a lie. He'd been lying to her for years now.
"I'll tell you eventually," he said, quietly, looking away. "Just not now."

"Alright," she said, nodding, understandably, with a small smile. "As long as you're alright, I'm okay with waiting. But if someone did that to you, just tell me, and I'll be after the prat before you can say Godric Gryffindor."
